An Introduction to Personal Knowledge Management (PKM)

Personal Knowledge Management (PKM) has become an essential skill for anyone looking to improve their productivity and understanding of the vast information they encounter daily. It's a practice that helps you effectively manage and structure the knowledge you gain from various sources, enabling you to retrieve and use it when needed. If you're new to the concept, don't worry—getting started is easier than you might think, and I’ve got some great resources to help you dive in.

Why PKM?

In a world overflowing with information, having a system for managing your thoughts, research, and ideas is key to staying organized and making sense of everything. PKM helps you develop this system. It's all about taking control of your learning and organizing it in a way that supports your personal and professional goals.

If you’re interested in PKM, here are a few accessible and highly recommended resources to kickstart your journey:

  • My introduction to the Zettelkasten method! This was a live course I provided students at the SJSU iSchool, and it's been a big hit with viewers so far.
  • Building a Second Brain by Tiago Forte: This book offers a comprehensive approach to PKM, teaching you how to collect, organize, and use information to amplify your creativity and efficiency.
  • How to Take Smart Notes by Sönke Ahrens: Ahrens dives deep into the Zettelkasten method, a note-taking system that helps transform fleeting thoughts into valuable knowledge you can use in the long term.
  • Nick Milo’s LYT YouTube Channel: Milo's channel explores practical and accessible ways to develop your knowledge management system, with a focus on the concept of living your best life through "Linking Your Thinking."

In addition to these, exploring the Johnny.Decimal system might be useful. This method allows you to organize your files and notes into neat, structured categories, making retrieval intuitive and quick.

My Main Advice

While these resources are a great starting point, it’s important not to get bogged down by any one system or style. Everyone's knowledge management needs are different. Read a couple of books, watch some videos, and experiment with various systems. But remember: Your system should serve you. Don't be afraid to tweak it as you go along. You’ll find what works for you by trial and error.

Start simple—take notes, experiment with how you categorize them, and adjust your approach as needed. Over time, your PKM system will evolve into something that supports your unique workflow.

Good luck with your PKM journey!
