Runner, Where Will You Go?
“But how will you know when you’re safe?”
He doesn’t know what’s following him, so he runs. The hallways are a maze. Dark shadows and emergency lights that seep a gloomy blue across the walls. His sneakers make a slapping sound against the floor.
Bursting out of the building, he strikes cool air. The mist of rain. Amber streetlamps. A bus, arriving at the curb.
“Where to?” the driver asks.
“Just…away,” he says.
“But how will you know when you’re safe?” asks the driver. In the rearview mirror, the man’s teeth are a white scimitar smile.
